I think that: Lotteries are a fair way of allocating school places.
Because: Of course, a few practicalities of geographical catchment areas may need to be solved first. Nonetheless, I don't see why some object to the idea of a lottery in principle. They are used for all kinds of allocation (places at medical schools in the Netherlands, tickets for Wimbledon and the Oscars, formerly they were used for lifeboats at sea, etc). They give each child an equal chance and prevent 'back door selection' through higher prices near better schools.
